ClickFix Attack Exploits Browser Cache to Bypass Windows Run Dialog Character Limits
Security · The Hacker News · 2026-10-06

Microsoft Threat Intelligence has observed a new variant of the ClickFix attack that leverages browser cache smuggling to bypass Windows Run dialog character limits. Compromised websites pre-fetch a malicious script payload, disguised as a PNG file, into the user's browser cache.
When a victim is prompted to execute a command, it runs the cached malicious content already on the device, circumventing the approximately 260-character limit of the Windows Run dialog. The staged payload is a Visual Basic Script (VBScript) that enumerates files in the browser's profile folder.
The VBScript compares file byte lengths to an expected value, copies a size-matching cache entry to a temporary VBScript file, and executes it. This script then harvests host information, fetches a PowerShell script from an external server, and ultimately loads .NET assemblies into memory to inject code into a legitimate Windows process (timeout.exe) to target browser and device credentials.
Key facts
- New ClickFix attack variant
- Uses browser cache smuggling
- Bypasses Windows Run dialog's ~260-character limit
- Payload disguised as PNG, executed as VBScript
- Targets browser and device credentials
Why it matters: Security engineers should be aware of this new technique for payload delivery, as it demonstrates a novel method for attackers to evade detection and system limitations, requiring updated defensive strategies.
ClickFix attacks are now using browser cache to smuggle payloads and bypass Windows Run dialog limitations, making them stealthier and harder to detect.
